Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Bedford public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
McKelvie/Preston Field sight-distance parking hazard
Cars parked along the Preston Field fence block the view of County Road traffic for drivers exiting McKelvie Intermediate School. A no-parking zone with enforceable signage is being sent to the Town Council.
Rundlett Hill Road speeding and pedestrian safety
Residents report cars traveling 50-70 mph over the crest, a serious hit-and-run, and new bus stops with young children near a new development's driveways. Police say enforcement resources are stretched and a dedicated traffic officer is requested in the 2027 budget.
Police substation siting on South River Road
A South River Road substation with 55 Constitution as headquarters could satisfy residents' desire for a west-side presence while letting the central station focus on central/west Bedford. Some members noted voters want police near schools, though members were skeptical of that rationale.
Relocating Police or Fire from 55 Constitution
Either way, two buildings are needed. Fire can't be temporarily housed during construction, so a likely sequence is a new Fire facility first, then renovating 55 Constitution. Police could move into leased offices in the meantime.
Police department facility deficiencies
Bedford's police have worked out of a retrofitted 1994 printing-company building with no security, terrible parking, and closets converted to offices. The chief says they've been out of space for years and wants a location on the Route 101 corridor, but no plan has stuck.
