Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Bedford public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
South River Road right-turn-on-red change
"No right turn on red" signs at the South River Road/Meetinghouse slip ramp were replaced with "stop here on red" signs to keep traffic moving, with State DOT concurrence. Some members worry drivers aren't yielding to left-turning traffic.
Meetinghouse Roundabout navigation
A resident suggested directional-use signs after near-collisions from drivers unexpectedly exiting the roundabout. The committee decided to leave signage as is, citing rare crashes and sign overload.
Cut into newly paved Bedford Center Road under five-year moratorium
The town generally bans cutting into roads paved within five years, but made an exception so the yoga studio can get fire sprinklers. The tap is near the road edge by the driveway, with a temporary patch over winter and a 100-foot mill and overlay in spring 2027.
Market & Main traffic and parking conditions
Board members called the South River Road corridor one of the town's worst traffic and parking trouble spots. The Bowman Gardens extension was cut to 90 days to force a concrete plan for studying and fixing it.
Acceptance of Indian Rock Road
Bedford now owns and maintains the 0.894-mile road, its drainage basins, and easements; the developer contributed $169,396 for stormwater upkeep. DPW expects the new road to last 30 years with preventative maintenance.
Liberty Hill Road reconstruction and detour
The southern stretch of Liberty Hill Road (Meadow Road to the Merrimack line) is under construction with daily closures, and the detour runs through Greenfield Parkway, Wallace, and Meadow Roads. Expect this for at least a couple more weeks.
Route 114 Corridor Study
State transportation funding shortfalls deferred planned Route 101 enhancements, including possible widening and bike lanes. A Route 114 corridor study kicks off June 16 in Goffstown.
Crash history at North Amherst Street and Wallace Road
A committee member asked whether the North Amherst/Wallace intersection, which sees crashes every year including a rollover, might qualify for federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funding. The intersection recently became a four-way stop.
McAllister Street and New Boston Road turning conflicts
A resident who uses the turn daily reports frequent close calls as drivers try to turn left onto McAllister against fast New Boston Road traffic. It's a state road, so the town's options are limited, but the concern is on the record.
Proposed guardrail removals on Beals Road and Back River Road
Bedford now has an engineering-based standard for deciding where guardrails belong, and several existing rails on Beals and Back River Roads don't meet it. Removing unneeded guardrails saves money and can actually make roads safer, but residents often perceive rails as protection, so the town plans a phased removal with public education.
Request for no-engine-braking restriction on Route 101
A resident asked for a 'no engine braking' restriction on Route 101 eastbound near Kahliko Lane, but the state DOT doesn't restrict approved safety equipment, noise usually comes from illegal exhaust modifications, and Route 101 is state-maintained.
Adoption of AASHTO Roadside Design Guide for guardrails
The town now has an official, nationally recognized engineering standard for deciding where guardrails are warranted. That could mean fewer guardrails where there's plenty of runoff room — which some residents may find counterintuitive even when the rail itself is the hazard.
Apple Leaf Drive truck turnaround
DPW wants an easement on the Keller property so plow and utility trucks can turn around at the end of Apple Leaf Drive — a condition that's existed since the 1960s. Talks continue before the May 4 hearing.
Pedestrian access to Constitution Drive from Cottage Court development
The narrow, steep entrance drive has guardrails on both sides and no sidewalk. The board required two extra feet of pavement and better gatehouse-area pedestrian design after extended staff and board concerns.
2026-2027 Road Reconstruction Program
The town carries $2M for road reconstruction in the budget, but a default budget would force cuts there. A last-minute $300K roads warrant article was added, then withdrawn after a procedural error.
Nashua Road bridge reconstruction over Riddle Brook
The stone box culvert that partially failed in 2008 will finally be rebuilt, with the state covering 80% of the ~$2.5M cost. Construction will be timed around the school calendar to limit detours near Bedford High School.
